Going through a divorce may produce a range of emotions for you. Announcing it may produce a range of responses as well. Some may be very sincere, others may be downright stupid. Nevertheless, you are going to have to deal with them. In the meantime, it is helpful to know what’s coming from those who don’t have a good sense of decorum, or any class.
With that, we highlight some of the things that divorcees hate hearing. Once you read this list, you may understand how uninformed and shallow some people can be.
Give him (or her) a second chance – They probably don’t realize that you have likely given your soon-to-be ex all the chances that they needed, but life has to go on and second chances must end.
I know a great person to hook you up with – Chances are that the last thing a divorcee needs is a random hook up. It may sound good, but the reality is that it may cause more problems than it solves.
I knew this was going to happen – There are few things more judgmental than a backhanded prediction after the fact.
Your ex is still single, you should think about it – Same thing applies to this saying. Divorcees are not likely to be looking to get together with an ex.
Did he (or she) cheat on you? – Few people want to broadcast their humiliation, so what is the upside to answering this question?
Marriage is hard work – This implies that because you’re getting divorced, you weren’t working hard enough. Again, shortsighted and disrespectful.
If you need legal and practical advice about your options during divorce, an experienced family law attorney can help.
