3 ways to spot a fake ID

| Aug 27, 2018 | Uncategorized |

It is not uncommon for minors under the age of 21 to circumvent the laws and obstacles intended to keep them from alcohol. High school and college students have long concocted schemes to get their hands on liquor and beer despite laws preventing this. An establishment that sells alcohol to a minor can lose its liquor license, and employees can be criminally liable, too.

One of the most common ways for minors to seek out alcohol is using a counterfeit identification. Fake IDs are often easy to spot for professionals in the industry, but sometimes these cards are more difficult to detect. Consider the following telltale signs that an identification card may not be legitimate.

1. Thicker on some parts

One of the easiest ways to make a counterfeit identification card is to take a real one and simply alter it. Counterfeit card makers commonly do this by cutting out photos and other details and pasting them on top of the original card. While this may seem passable at first glance, this method often results in certain parts of the ID being raised slightly higher than the rest—thus revealing the illegitimacy of the ID.

2. No holographic details

According to the Huffington Post, many states have incorporated microprint technology into identification cards. These tiny images are nearly impossible to replicate and are visible only when held up to a light. Similarly, many IDs feature holographic details that copiers cannot easily recreate. Cards that do not have any of these details are highly suspect.

3. Barcode does not work

Many ID cards also feature scannable barcodes that reveal information about the individual. This barcode typically stores the information featured on the card as well as additional data that law enforcement may use. When the barcode is invalid, though, it is a sign that the ID is probably not real.
